In the 17th century the king, Marthanda Varma the princely state of Travancore and Thiruvananthapuram was made the capital of Travancore. After the independence of India in 1947, Thiruvananthapuram became the capital of Travancore-Cochin State and remained the capital of the state of Kerala in 1956 when the new Indian state was formed.

The Arabian Sea in the west, Tamil Nadu binds Trivandrum in the east and Kollam district in the North. Its land area covers 2192 km2 and its population is 3,307,284 as per the 2011 census record.

Trivandrum is not only a state capital; it is also a strategic place of India. The southern Air command, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) India’s first rocket launching center and some other defense organizations are located in this city.
