Tamil Nadu is the eleventh largest state by area and the sixth largest state by population. It lies in the southernmost part of the Indian subcontinent. Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. The union territory of Puducherry and the southern Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh border it. Its seashore shares with the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait in the southeast, and the Indian Ocean in the south. It shares a maritime border with the country of Sri Lanka.

Following the independence of India, the Madras presidency became Madras state. These included the present-day Tamilnadu, Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, the Malabar region of North Kerala, and Bellary, South Canara and Udupi districts of Karnataka. After the formation of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore State, it subsequently split up linguistic basis. Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu on January 14, 1969.

Tamilnadu is well connected with rail and roads.
It has four international airports namely
Chennai International Airport, Coimbatore International Airport, Tiruchirapalli International Airport, and Madurai International Airport. In addition, two domestic airports, one in Salem and the other is in Tuticorin.

Three major seaports are located at Chennai, Ennore, and Tuticorin, as well as seven other minor ports including Cuddalore and Nagapattinam.

The climate

The dry sub-humid to semi-arid climate state is mostly dependent on monsoon rains. Tamil Nadu has two distinct periods of rainfall, like its neighbor Kerala. Southwest monsoon from June to September, and Northeast monsoon from October to December.
